The essential guide to.... York Street

impsTALK.co.uk > Guides > York Street

Boston United play their home matches of Association Football at a ground called 'York Street'.

The ground is called 'York Street' because it is located on 'York Street'. Attempts to rename the ground after a corporate sponsor shall not be dignified here, nor are we about to rewind the clocks and refer to the place as 'Shoddys Lane' which is, apparently, what some elderly fans still call it. Not to worry: these dinosaurs will be dead soon anyway.

York Street has a rustic charm. Although it was rebuilt in the early 1980s, it feels much older and is now starting to look a little tired and frayed around the edges. That said, it is a wonderful place to watch non-league ground. There's plenty of seating, plenty of terracing, all four stands are covered (except the two 'wings' on the Town End), the food is good, the beer is cheap and it's walking distance from the town centre. What more, really, could one possibly want?

Segregation has been continued from Boston's five years in the League, with away fans being placed in the huge Town End terrace. And county yourself lucky: the Boston fans hate the fact they're not allowed in there. Although the Town End was always used by away fans, and six or seven Boston fans, a couple of dogs and a seagull, there is a feeling that the terrace 'belongs' to the Town Enders, a group that suddenly emerged when Boston started winning trophies under Steve Evans a decade ago.

They were soon evicted when segregation was introduced as the Pilgrims climbed the pyramid. It became painfully obvious that having 300 visiting fans trekking around to the York Street end to their stand had 'flashpoint' written all over it, so the Town End was given to the away fans and has remained that way ever since as has the amount of whining from the displaced Boston fans.
